2021 Chevy Silverado Engine Options
One thing is certain when it comes to the Chevy Silverado: People will get out of your way when they see you coming into the grocery store parking lot. The Silverado is a literal and figurative giant in the annals of American car-making, annually ranking as one of the nation’s two or three best-selling pickup trucks. This is one vehicle you should consider if you’re looking for size and quality.
While you can certainly take the Silverado with you for store runs, you might be underestimating the truck’s utility just a bit. The Silverado is a powerful machine with enormous capabilities for towing, moving, and other industrial-sized jobs, in addition to going off-road in the desert and taking steep climbs into the mountains for adventures.
What gives the Silverado its horsepower and street credibility? It’s the engine, of course. Everything revolves around the Chevy Silverado engine, especially its high miles per gallon ratings.
If the 2021 Silverado is on your “check-it-out” list, here’s everything you need to know about the engine.
Silverado Specs
Before taking apart the Silverado engine, let’s first consider the various configurations that are available to you for your driving pleasure. You’ll choose from eight trims: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country.
Depending on your preference and requirements, you can customize your choice of cab and bed. The choices include regular cab/long bed, double cab/standard bed, crew cab/short bed, and crew cab/standard bed. The box length ranges from about 70 inches to 100 inches.
The Custom trim comes standard with a single 2.7 liter eight-speed automatic transmission, while the remaining trims offer either two, three, or four choices for the engine. That’s when the fun begins.
Silverado Engine Options
Every Silverado engine comes loaded for bear, with horsepower and torque aplenty. Here’s a rundown on each engine individually (not every engine is available with every trim):
- The 2.7-liter turbo engine offers 310 horsepower at 5600 rpm and generates 348 pound-feet of torque. The engine includes an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- The 3.0-liter DuraMaxturbodiesel l6 engine generates 277 horsepower at 3750 rpm and generates 460 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
- The 4.3-liter Ecotec3 V-6 engine is built with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 285 horsepower at 5300 RPM, generating 305 pound-feet of torque.
- The 5.3-liter Ecotec3 V-8 engine also offers a six-speed automatic transmission. You’ll get 355 horsepower at 5600 RPM, producing 383 pound-feet of torque. Vehicles with this engine produced after March 2021 come equipped with active fuel management.
- The 6.2-liter Ecotec3 V-8 engine creates 420 horsepower and generates 460 pound-feet of torque. This engine provides Dynamic Fuel Management technology and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
These engines offer excellent performance features, including electronically controlled transmission with overdrive; tow/haul mode to reduce shift cycling; powertrain grade braking, and cruise grade braking. Keep in mind that for towing, the Chevy Silverado in almost every case may require additional optional equipment.
Depending on the ultimate configuration of engine, bed, and cab, you’ll get massive maximum towing power from between 9,300 pounds and 13,300 pounds. An important reminder: Before you buy a vehicle and use it for towing, make sure to review the trailer section of the owner’s manual. The weight of passengers, cargo, and other options or accessories may reduce the towing capability.
Silverado Range
One part of the value of a high-performance truck engine is the ability to keep the car on the road. All the Silverado engine options provide excellent cruising ranges and mpg ratings. Your actual performance will vary based on how and where you drive and the exact configurations. Based on EPA highway estimates, you could stay on the road for anywhere from 384 miles in the city up to 590 miles or more on the highway.
The Silverado engines get great gas mileage out of their sizable fuel tanks. The middle engine in the line, the 3.0-liter DuraMax turbodiesel, benchmarks at an estimated 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway from each tank. Features such as stop/start technology and a variable intake manifold contribute to its incredible efficiency.
Silverado Special Features
It wouldn’t be a 2021 model without noting some of the special technological features available in the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado. Chief among them is the Advanced Trailering System, which showcases a unique embedded app to help with the challenge of safe trailer operation. The app offers customized trailer profiles, along with pre-departure checklists, trailer lighting diagnostics, trailer tire pressure/temperature monitoring, and the ability to create and sync trailer profiles with the myChevrolet Mobile App.
Also helping with the rigors of towing is an onboard camera system that offers 15 separate views. This provides peace of mind on all phases of towing by providing improved road vision. You’ll be able to see what’s happening with custom views for hitching and parking, and you’ll also have the ability to capture various views while you’re on the road. The Silverado is built to make sure you and your loved ones get from here to there safely. The extra camera views enable you to maximize the value of the powerful Silverado engine technologies.
