2022 Chevy Trax vs. Equinox

May 18th, 2022 by

Are you looking for a new Chevy SUV that’s built to last, with graceful handling and the latest technology? Both the 2022 Chevy Trax and the 2022 Chevy Equinox are excellent choices. These two five-seat SUVs have a lot in common. The Equinox is in the compact class and has ample space, a strong engine, and extra luxuries. The Trax is subcompact and offers a very similar experience at a lower price. Let’s compare the latest Chevy Trax versus the Equinox.

Chevy Equinox vs. Trax: Trim Levels and Exterior

Chevy divided the Equinox into four trims: LS, LT, RS, and Premier. The 2022 Equinox is a sleek, modern, and eye-catching SUV, largely due to its inventive sculpting and LED daytime running lights. Solar-absorbing glass, roof racks, a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate, and LED taillights are just a few of the Equinox’s potential features, with the top items packed into the Premier edition.

The 2022 Chevy Trax is like a more youthful and compact Equinox and comes with two trim levels: LS and LT. The LT is available in three limited editions: Midnight, Redline, and Sport, each with customized appearances. Halogen reflector headlights, body-color outside mirrors, LED taillights, and 16-inch alloy wheels are standard on the Trax LS. Upgrading to the LT adds deep-tinted glass, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof-mounted side rails, and front and rear splash guards.

The 2022 Equinox comes in a variety of colors: Summit White, Midnight Blue Metallic, Pacific Blue Metallic, Nightfall Gray Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Mosaic Black Metallic, Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, and Cajun Red Tintcoat.

The 2022 Trax’s color options include Summit White, Shadow Gray Metallic, Stone Gray Metallic, Black Cherry Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Crimson Metallic, Midnight Blue Metallic, Mosaic Black Metallic, and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat.

Tintcoat paint options apply a clear coat with a slight color tinting for a deeper color profile, and tricoat paint combines a normal base coat and a partially transparent second color. Whether you pick one of these colors or the classic Summit White, you have many options for customizing a 2022 Chevy Equinox or Trax.

Trax Engine vs Equinox Engine

The 2022 Chevy Trax is powered by a 1.4-liter ECOTEC turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, transmitting power via a six-speed automatic transmission. Both the LS and LT trims of the 2022 Chevy Trax offer front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the SUV gets up to 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

By comparison, the 2022 Chevy Equinox carries a powerful 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine also using a six-speed automatic transmission. It gets 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. The Premier trim gets 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while all other trims get 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Since 2021, the Trax has gotten a significant power boost out of the same engine. The 2020 version reached 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Towing numbers on the Trax’s new engine are incoming but should be the same rating from 2021 at 1,263 pounds, not far from the Equinox’s 1,500-pound rating.

Both vehicles offer dependable performance with more than enough power for city and highway driving. However, if you like to get the latest and greatest edition of a Chevy vehicle, the Trax is looking better than ever.

Interior Comparison

Although the Equinox is the larger model, the Trax is still quite roomy, with 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The interior is well-designed, with up to four seating configurations using a 60/40-split folding second row. A tidy center stack and a lofty four-way adjustable driver’s seat provide confidence on the road. A 7-inch infotainment display built into the dashboard appears on every model, along with a rear-vision camera, durable cloth upholstery (leatherette on the LT), a two-way manual adjusting front passenger seat, single-zone temperature controls, and remote keyless entry and start.

As for entertainment and connections, the 2022 Chevrolet Trax has six speakers to start, plus a SiriusXM radio trial subscription, Chevrolet connected services, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, voice commands, Bluetooth audio streaming, and access to in-car Wi-Fi. It also includes a 12-volt power outlet, an eight-point digital compass, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot, and dual USB ports.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Equinox emphasizes space for the whole family, which is why it gets a massive cargo area of 29.9 cubic feet. The compact Chevy SUV has a 7-inch touch screen just like its smaller cousin. It also includes a 60/40-split bench and has hidden rear floor storage compartments.

Both the Equinox and Trax offer a high-value interior for their price and size. The Trax keeps it classy with available leatherette trim, a power sunroof, steering-wheel-mounted controls, a cargo shelf and light, and a satin silver and chrome shift knob. Opt for the starting 2022 Equinox L instead, and you’ll get dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a luxury premium cloth seat trim. Higher models carry further touches, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather seat upholstery.

The 2022 Chevy Trax and 2022 Chevy Equinox both carry the latest versions of the automakers’ forward-collision warning system, blind-spot monitoring system, and rear parking sensors, to name a few features. The Equinox’s Chevy Safety Assist means every trim level gets IntelliBeam lights, a following distance indicator, lane-keep assist and departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and front pedestrian braking. Many of these features are on the Trax LT or available on both editions of the 2022 Trax.

If you need just five seats and aren’t concerned about maximum horsepower or cargo space, you can save more with the Trax and still get the same excellent Chevy experience. On the other side, the Equinox gives you a nice increase in room, excitement, and luxury. It all comes down to your needs and preference.
