2023 Chevy Silverado vs. 2023 Toyota Tundra

The market segment of full-size pickups is brimming with strong competition, and the Chevrolet Silverado consistently ranks among the top in its class. One of its direct competitors, the Toyota Tundra, often receives similar ratings from both consumers and experts, so if you’re in the market for a new pickup you might be interested in learning how these two segment leaders stack up against each other. We’ve compared the upcoming 2023 versions of each model and broken it down for you.

Trim Levels and Exterior

Experts believe the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado will contain few updates, and the trims should remain consistent from the outgoing model year. With that in mind, you can expect to have a choice between eight trim levels for the Silverado 1500: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2. Each should allow configuration options that include a regular, double, or crew cab, as well as a standard, short, or long bed.

The exterior dimensions of the 2023 Silverado remain unpublished as yet, but they look to be similar or identical to the 2022 model. Depending on your trim and configuration, that means a length ranging from 229.7 to 241.4 inches, a width of 81 inches, and a height from 75.4 to 78.7 inches.

The 2023 Toyota Tundra, too, should be largely a carryover model. If the trims remain the same, the vehicle will be available with seven options: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone. Depending on the trim you choose, your configuration options include a double cab, a crew cab (called CrewMax), and a bed measuring 5.5, 6.5, or 8.1 feet. Depending on bed size, the vehicle is likely to range from 233.6 to 252.5 inches long. The overall width should be a little above 80 inches, with a height of around 78 inches.

One exterior update is the SX package available on the SR5 trim level, which lends a bolder appearance with Dark Gray Metallic wheels, black trim on the body, badgeless doors, and a blacked-out badge on the tailgate. Should you opt for the SX package, you can choose from four body colors: White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, and Midnight Black Metallic.

Engine

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado should be available in a range of powertrain options, the same as the outgoing model’s. The base-level engine is a 2.7-liter I-4 that produces 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The next level up gets you a 5.3-liter V-8 that produces 355 horses and 383 pound-feet of torque. Another V-8 option is 6.2 liters and puts out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a 3-liter turbo-diesel I-6 that gets 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The I-4 corresponds with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the V-8s and diesel work with a 10-speed.

For the 2023 Tundra, Toyota will offer two powertrain options: a twin-turbo V-6 and a hybrid twin-turbo V-6, each paired with a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The former is capable of generating 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the latter gets you 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

Interior

Presuming that the exterior dimensions are unchanged from the outgoing model, the 2023 Silverado will provide ample space for both the driver and passengers across all cab configurations, with legroom being 44.5 inches in the front row and 35.2 to 43.4 inches in the rear. As for connectivity features, the center stack is likely to feature a large touchscreen measuring up to 13.4 inches, with features such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The 2023 Tundra, too, should be similar to the outgoing model in terms of its interior dimensions, with 41.2 inches of front legroom and up to 41.6 inches in the rear. The touchscreen on the center stack will measure 8 or 14 inches depending on your trim. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility are standard.

Fuel Economy

No fuel economy estimates are yet available for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado. That being said, if the new model is comparable to last year’s, it should get up to 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, depending on your powertrain and drivetrain option.

According to Toyota, the fuel economy for the 2023 Tundra is 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Price

The pricing for both the Silverado and the Tundra is still unspecified, but experts have put forth estimates based on historical pricing data. For the Silverado base Work Truck trim level, you can expect an MSRP of around $32,000, though particular cab, powertrain, and drivetrain configurations may increase this starting price.

Moving up from there, the price is likely to rise in $4,000 to $5,000 increments until you reach the mid-range Custom Trail Boss trim, which should come in at around $47,000 to start. By the time you reach the top of the line, with the High Country and ZR2 trims, you’re looking at anywhere from $59,000 to $70,000.

For the 2023 Tundra, the expected price range tracks along a similar route. On the low end, an SR with basic configurations should be around $36,000. For the mid-range trims, such as the Platinum and the 1794 Edition, it would be reasonable to expect something between $57,000 and $62,000. With the high-end TRD Pro and Capstone trims, $67,000 to $75,000 may be a fair estimate, given the MSRPs of the 2022 model year.

Release Date

Industry insiders expect the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado to enter production at some point in the third or fourth quarter of 2022, suggesting a release date late in the year or early in the next. As for the Toyota Tundra, it may become available to consumers sometime in the summer of 2022, though some experts believe, based on Toyota’s release history, that a fall release is more likely.
