5 unique features of the Chevy Silverado
Chevy introduced the fifth generation of the Silverado in 2022, immediately catching the attention of its competition and truck enthusiasts everywhere. Of course, the pickup already had a decade-long cult-like following. Now, the Silverado comes with game-changing tech, top-tier performance, additional safety features, and a premium cabin.
Chevy tweaked the 2023 model to include additional off-road trims, engine options, and technology features. Now, you can purchase a Silverado in one of 10 trims, including the all-new ZR2 Bison, an off-road warrior truck. We love this truck so much that we asked our pickup experts to discuss their favorite features. Here’s what they told us:
New Signature ZR2 Bison Model Crushes Off-Road Segment
Our first choice for the best new Silverado feature isn’t a feature at all but a signature model. The ZR2 trim has long been Chevy’s off-road-ready truck. But for 2023, Chevy added more off-road equipment to it, made it more capable, and called it the ZR2 Bison.
A 6.6-liter V-8 engine that achieves 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque comes standard. Alternatively, you can opt for the heart-thumping 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 beast that pumps out 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Chevy opted for 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in aggressive 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.
And if that wasn’t enough to turn heads, Chevy brought in American Expedition, known for its off-road equipment packages, to up-fit the Silverado ZR2 Bison. You’ll find rugged steel bumpers with integrated recovery points and step pads, steel rock rails, and a network of hot-stamped Boron steel underbody skid plates protecting the fuel tank, front and rear locking differentials, and a transfer case.
Powerful Engine Options
We absolutely love the power of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado engine lineup. The standard engine on the lower trims is a feisty 2.7-liter turbo four that Chevy optimized specifically for pickups. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic to produce 310 horsepower, 430 lb-ft of torque, and a towing capacity of 9,600 pounds.
Midrange models come with GM’s 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain puts out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque and tows up to 11,600 pounds, making it more than capable of hard work. Then, there’s the 6.2-liter V-8 engine that puts out 420 horsepower, 460 lb-ft of torque, and tows up to 12,500 pounds.
You also get the perfect marriage between power and efficiency with the Silverado’s 3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine that produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque along with a 13,300-pound towing capacity.
Next-Level In-Vehicle Tech and Amenities
Everyone loves the new Silverado’s interior due to its spacious, comfortable, and well-thought-out cabin layout; must-have tech; and modern style. The convenient under-seat storage compartment lets you hide cargo from prying eyes. In-vehicle tech runs through a 13.4-inch touch screen, preloaded with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Google Play systems to keep you connected while you’re on the go.
With the midrange models, you can opt for top-tier leather upholstery in various colors and styles, which harmoniously blend with real open-pore wood trim. In addition, heated and ventilated seats in both rows, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an electronic transmission range selector make you feel at home and ready to launch.
GM’s Super Cruise, a semiautonomous driving system, takes cruise control to the next level. The Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver-assist systems lets you drive confidently knowing Chevy has your back.
This suite includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, following distance indicator, IntelliBeam high-beam assist, front and rear park assist, rear cross-traffic braking, rear pedestrian alert, and lane-change alert with side blind zone alert.
Impressive Towing Capability
If you need a vehicle that you can use for towing, then look no further than the Silverado. Chevy has even made it enjoyable because it has a bevy of trailer functions that are designed to make life easy when you hitch up and head out. For example, the trailering towing systems include a unique camera system that uses eight cameras to provide up to 14 views from above, behind, and around GM’s trailer, including a hitch view.
When you download the Chevy Trailering App, you can preset multiple trailer profiles to remember specs, monitor equipment such as tire pressure and temperature, and create pre-departure and post-arrival checklists.
Other trailering features you’ll love include the Trailer Sway Control system that automatically adjusts the throttle and brakes to keep your trailer heading in your intended direction and in line with your Silverado. In addition, the hill-start assist and auto grade braking systems take the sweat out of navigating steep terrain. The Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert system also syncs with your Silverado’s blind-zone system, allowing you to confidently change lanes.
Multi-Flex Tailgate
Most trucks have introduced an integrated tailgate system, but none have matched Chevy’s Multi-Flex Tailgate. This impressive system has six different positions to help make your work easier. The primary tailgate opens with the key fob, a switch inside the cab, or a button on the tailgate and operates like a traditional tailgate.
Next, you have a primary gate load stop position where an inner gate flips up to stop longer items from sliding out. The same inner gate folds out to give you a longer reach inside the bed with the tailgate closed. You can open that inner gate with the tailgate closed to work as a load stop for stacked second-tier items.
In addition, you can configure that inner gate to create a step for easy entry into the bed with the tailgate lowered. This makes loading and unloading faster, removing the need to handle cargo twice. Instead, simply carry it in and position it where you want it.
Lastly, the inner gate folds down with the tailgate up and acts as a workbench. You can spread out blueprints, set up your laptop, review the latest purchase orders, or rest your cup of coffee there while you eat breakfast.
