If you love the outdoors, Eastern Ohio is a great place to live or visit. In fact, this portion of the state features an array of campgrounds for all camping skill levels. Whether you’re a new camper or an expert, there’s no shortage of camping destinations for you in the state. These are some of our favorites:

Mohican State Park

If you prefer a traditional camping experience, Mohican State Park is a great spot to check out. The campground is convenient — if you live in Columbus, Cleveland, or anywhere in between, you won’t have to go far to have an adventure outdoors.

The Mohican State Park campground offers campsites, primitive shelters, and deluxe cabins. You can expect to spend about $30 each night for most camping experiences in this park. Campgrounds will have access to showers, flush toilets, a swimming pool, and basketball courts. At the camp store, youngsters can even mine for gems.

One of the park’s most popular features is the river, which runs for 27 miles through the park. If you love to kayak or canoe, this should definitely be on your to-do list. The park also offers opportunities for hiking as well as some waterfalls that you can view.

Beaver Creek State Park

Beaver Creek State Park is perhaps a campground that is geared toward the more skilled adventurers. This Eastern Ohio campground sits near the foothills surrounding the Appalachian Mountains, and it’s a less forgiving environment than some other sites. In the park, you’ll find about 45 other campsites, but only six offer electric hookups. You’ll have access to a picnic table and a fire pit, but showers and toilets aren’t available on-site. The park also offers three cabins with electricity but no running water.

Once you’ve got your campsite set up, it’s time to explore the area. The trails are suitable for hiking, and the park also features an abandoned pioneer village.

Big Arb’s Campground

If you love the social environment that comes with camping, you don’t want to miss Big Arb’s Campground. Situated on 75 acres in Columbiana County, Big Arb’s Campground is a safe and quiet getaway. This campground features 40 acres of wooded area, complete with exciting hiking trails.

Some campsites at Big Arb’s offer electrical hookups, and some connect for wastewater. The campground is also pet friendly. Other amenities include a heated swimming pool, hayrides, a party pavilion, volleyball, a playground, laundry facilities, a snack bar, and a camp store. You’ll also have access to free showers and flush toilets.

Guilford Lake State Park Campground

Guilford Lake State Park Campground is another inviting place where you can spend a weekend. If you like your camping trips with a side of boating or fishing, you don’t want to miss out on this pet-friendly camping spot. You’ll find an assortment of electrical sites, and each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. As a camper, you’ll have access to a fishing dock, drinking water, flush toilets, and showers. A basketball court and playground are also available, and you can rent a paddle boat or kayak.

You need to make a reservation to camp at Guilford Lake either online or via phone.

Barkcamp State Park

Barkcamp State Park features some of Ohio’s most beautiful scenery. Situated near the lakeside and gorgeous green hills, you won’t be at a loss for outdoor activities here. Popular activities at this campground include horseback riding, paddling, and fishing. Children may love the Storybook Trail, which is an easy half-mile hike that tells a story as you hike through each segment. Before the sun sets, make sure to check out the 700-foot beach near the lake. It’s a great spot for sunning and swimming.

Some camping sites offer full hookups, while others offer electric hookups. Some sites are for tents only. The park offers one group camping spot as well as several Sherman cabins. Three shelters are available for rent if you have a special event planned.

Atwood Lake Park

When you arrive at Atwood Lake Park, you’ll notice how well maintained the grounds are. That’s just one reason why so many families choose to come back to this campground each year. The park amenities include hiking trails, a swimming beach, seasonal events, laundry facilities, a camp store, game courts, a playground, and modern restrooms. Fishing is also an option.

Here, you’ll find an array of campsites with amazing lake views. If you have an RV or tent, you’ll have access to over 500 sites. Each site has a campfire pit and a picnic table. Some sites also have electric service. If you prefer a cabin, Atwood Lake Park offers vacation cabins with two rooms and private bathrooms, as well as more rustic patio cabins.

Salt Fork State Park Campground

Salt Fork State Park Campground offers large campsites. There’s plenty of space for RVs as well as tent campers. Sites include electricity and full hookup options. Some sites are also accessible. Campers have access to flush toilets, heated shower houses, and dump sites. An equestrian campsite is also available.

The campground’s store features camping supplies and other useful items. The playground offers a great way for kids to spend time outside. Campers also have access to the beach and boat launch. During certain times of the year, the campground also offers gem mining. If you like a campground that offers events, Salt Fork has a lot to offer.
